    <p>I'm a blind web/Android developer who has built an open source
      OSM-based navigation system for Android. I'm also Austin-based.
      Unfortunately it hasn't really been worked on in years, but I
      recently did a survey of accessible Android navigation apps and
      found nothing that does what I want, so I'm considering dusting it
      off. I may also consider commercializing it to see if it can make
      a few bucks. If there's local OSM a11y work in progress, that may
      give me the kick in the ass I need to update it. And of course I
      want to integrate accessibility tagging schemes as well. It'd be
      fun to hack on this stuff with local folks, since a11y can be
      lonely work, and is more so when it's niche like mapping. My
      girlfriend is also a wheelchair user, and I bet it wouldn't be too
      hard to twist her arm to help with tagging things like accessible
      bathrooms, curb cuts, etc. We collectively pretty much know where
      all the broken sidewalk is, and I've long considered building some
      sort of easy data collection app that sends those issues straight
      to OSM.<br>

                <br>
                That is great news. We (openstreetmap montréal) worked
                with a prof at<br>
                Concordia University (<a moz-do-not-send="true"
                  href="http://www.concordia.ca" rel="noreferrer"
                  target="_blank">www.concordia.ca</a>) on a class
                project for one of<br>
                his graduate courses in geography. Students gathered
                data, made<br>
                modifications to OSM and did some rendering after that,
                specifically<br>
                with accessibility in mind. They elected to use a
                "sidewalk distinct<br>
                from street" model since it gives more flexibility to
                represent all<br>
                topologies (at least with less kludging) than the
                "sidewalk as street<br>
                attribute" model.<br>
                <br>
                We now have a region of downtown Montréal that has both
                representations<br>
                next to each other, so there's a discusison we'll need
                to have here<br>
                about where we go. Your proposal will surely be part of
                that discussion.<br>

                <br>
                Personally, I prefer to represent sidewalks distinctly,
                so you'll have<br>
                my vote.<br>
