I live in Charlottesville, Virginia - on the production side we have regular meetups to map sidewalks and other spaces with an accessibility perspective

https://www.codeforcville.org/sidewalk-mapping
and have gotten some "corporate" partners locally for a meetup (tomorrow, in fact)

https://ccri.com/mapathon/ :)

On the more leading edge side I'm working on some indoor mapping projects and have gotten a few grants to buy LIDAR scanning gear (in the form of iPads!) and could definitely use some community support to get more data and additional perspectives?

https://www.codeforcville.org/lidardb - this is where we're working

there's a lot of work going on here... it's just still pretty complicated and technical... the best software for indoor mapping is being done in the robotics space and the crosswalk over to open street map and development with real user interfaces is an open problem.

lastly - i'm working with a blind and low vision research team to see this work with haptic feedback tools, and on the production outbound we have a neat project with laser etchers developing tactile maps based on open street map content

https://guides.hsl.virginia.edu/it-services-blog/zoombites/tactile-map-design-in-the-library

anyhow - there's a lot of work to be done - i think the indoor mapping is particularly fresh

sidewalks and such are more approachable, and there are groups developing tools like https://tasks.opensidewalks.com/projects/9 for instance and the accessmap.io product

anyhow - if there a 5-10 minute window to present i'd be glad to connect

Subject: [Accessibility] Event

Dear all,

I’m an accessibility and usability consultant at AbilityNet, a UK tech charity, and I also volunteer separately for the Missing Maps project/Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team. I’ve been on this list for a while and wondered if there would be any interest in a virtual meetup for people working at the intersection of accessibility and GIS?

We (AbilityNet) have our annual accessibility and inclusive design conference coming up in November, TechSharePro<https://abilitynet.org.uk/techsharepro-2021>, and there would be the opportunity to host something like a networking session at this if this is of interest. (We would not let the ticket price be a barrier to anyone wishing to attend.) I haven’t come across much in the way of events for people working at the intersection of accessibility and maps, but do fill me in if I have missed them.

Do let me know your thoughts or suggestions. We would also be looking for a co-host for this session if anyone would like to volunteer.

Best wishes,
