Out of sheer desparation I built the mappaint plugin against
josm-latest.jar version 203 (2007/02/17) with my javac, version 1.5.0_10

That works.

if anyone else has problems with Kristian's version try the jar built by
me from http://www.deelkar.net/osm/mappaint.jar
