The Frankieandshadow namefinder is excellent! I found the streets I
personally created in OSM within a split second. Please, please, please
let's adopt this finder for OSM in General and replace the finder on
the homepage! The XML result is also excellent. If we could enhance the
xml a bit so it returns gml and/or kml, it would be an excellent
future-safe place finder that can be integrated in GIS and Google Maps
and Earth. Wouldn't that be a nice extra on OSM?<br>
<br>
But I am wondering what frankieandshadow does in the background; they
don't seem to query the main OSM database directly, but build some sort
of index? What is required in order to get this functionallity running
from the main OSM site?<br>
<br>
My guess is that finding housenumbers is probably no option (yet)<br>

For example: When I enter Schuckertplatz at OSM I simply get nothing
useful, but the name finder just points me to the place I was looking for.
I would think having a good engine to find things is an *essential* part
of an online map and make the OSM map much more useful - so IMHO this is
really important.
Is there any chance to replace the current "finding engine"?

I disagree on this point. Even points well mapped are not always found
correctly, take the advice, just implement what is currently on
frankieandshadow.com<br>

The fact that you were searching for a road name won't have helped
you much either as I don't think any of the current sources goes to
anything like that level of detail - they really only have names of
towns and villages I think.
The solution therefore is probably just to add the OSM name finder
to the list of sites which the search engine uses rather than
replacing one with the other.
I'll try and have a look at it anyway...
