This cartographer (BSc degree) thinks that it might well serve in
creating an even better looking map. Indeed new problems appear when
overlaying roads, text and so on.<br>
<br>
Regarding the public domain. I have images in ecw and tiff available
(that are well over 250Mb) for the whole earth that are really public
domain, completely and without restrictions. I would love to donate
these to some enthousiastic that is intending to get it into mapnik or
OSM.<br>
