There are currently at least three rendering tools, Mapnik, Osmarender and Kosmos and all are struggling to remain updated on all these keys.

=> What about sharing symbolization (= rendering) rules among all renderers?

There are already some examples around like in Kosmos, where it says that "people are sharing their rendering rules in Category:Kosmos rules" (c.f. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/KosmosStandardRules ). These rules could be overwritten by local/specialized ones (as proposed by ISO 19117 - Portrayal). But what's lacking in all these examples I've seen so far, is a rendering priority, a symbology and - before all - a machine readable common syntax.

=> So, what about using SLD? (See e.g. http://geoserver.org/display/GEOSDOC/SLD+Snippets). Out of SLD one could then generate standard rendering rules for all three tools.

Any comments or proposals on this?
