I would like to invite the OSM community – and particularly developers
of open source software from the OSM ecosystem – to add project ideas
for Google Summer of Code 2019 to the wiki:

https://wiki.osm.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/2019/Project_ideas

During GSoC, university students receive stipends from Google and spend
a couple months contributing to FOSS projects. Students are mentored by
more experienced contributors during that time. And while students
aren't restricted to the suggested project ideas, most end up picking
something from that list.

OSM has successfully participated as a mentoring organization in Google
Summer of Code for over a decade, and members of the Engineering Working
Group are currently working on the application for this year. We hope to
have at least some content on the ideas page by the application deadline
(Wednesday – see https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/timeline
for the full timeline), but of course you'll be able to edit your
project ideas and add more of them afterwards, too.

GSoC is always an opportunity for FOSS projects to attract new
developers and get some cool features implemented, so I hope to see a
lot activity again this year!

Tobias
