<div dir="ltr">Some of the Maptime lessons might help answer this. There is a focused effort in creating a safe space where anyone can contribute ideas and questions without reproach. While there have been leaders facilitating each event, everyone is responsible for the success of the session. In the couple we've held, there's been a range of diversity and expertise in the room.<div>
<br></div><div>For OSM specific parties - I'd love to see if thematic gatherings make a difference in bringing a more diverse group together. The most diverse mapping party I've been to was the World Bank OpenCities Nepal event in NYC organized by Columbia students. That event tapped into the Nepalese diaspora as well as those interested in geospatial and crisis response respectively. <div>

We have started one in NYC that follows their example -- taking broader views on mapping tools and questions. It is not OSM specific, but OSM is definitely part of the toolkit.<br>
