This is a great use case that I think highlights a few issues:

- Different rendering approaches for static & dynamic historical activity. I'm not sure about this, but my current belief is that static (i.e. fixed to the ground) things would be best suited for tiles, while dynamic (i.e. moving) things would be better suited for another rendering approach. Luckily, there are pretty cool technologies in place for each. I've been focused on just getting a tiling infrastructure set up, so if anyone has any good ideas for a dynamic rendering tool or approach, that would be great.

- Data storage for static & dynamic historical activity. Again, I'm not sure about this, but my belief is that we should store all of this together. I'm thinking we should make every effort to set up an environment that people can use to share information in ways that encourage contribution and improvement of the existing data. Anyone have any suggestions for appropriate data formats / schema we should try to respect or integrate with for these events?

I would think that the typical map features (fields, terrain, borders etc)
should be in a historic map data set to create the base map for the
appropriate date.

For unit movements, I would think this would be a sort of specific data set
to overlay on top. Maybe stored in a database, but you could just have it
coded in an array or xml file if you only did it on a single battle basis.
Something like the GeoCommons maps with a time slider to move markers
springs to mind.
I found this example: http://geocommons.com/maps/137243

i would very much like to be able to do queries/filters on the unit data,
so some sort of db would be preferable. in my ideal scenario, you would
be able to do something like ask to animate the movement of specific
regiments, excluding all else, e.g. show me the movements of NY Regiments
at Antietam.
