The reason for the first language comment is a post in French by one of the project managers recently, it really flows much better than similar posts by them in English.

Once you have the basic framework or design sorted out then its a much simpler matter to be an editor. Having been a newsletter editor many years ago I found it is difficult to maintain the number of articles once the initial rush is over which is why I might shy away from once a month. The framework is important, I suggest an article by an NGO or other aid agency, one on how to use some feature of iD, one on how to use some feature of JOSM. One on walking papers and even perhaps GPS tracks and the problems near tall buildings. A note from El Presidente would that be Heather? A bit of OSM history, how we have changed the way we map over time, I even have a GARMIN something or other lying around on the shelf which shows how long I've been mapping and a bit on how OSM works. Another would be an article on Nepal and the problems we had coping with large numbers of new mappers and how we are thinking of changing the task manager as a result of these.

To me the main target is people who have mapped once or twice to keep in touch so as to bring them back in for a crisis, it lessens the training load for a start, and secondly to see if we can interest some of the less active mappers into doing a little more mapping from time to time.

Cheerio John

On 4 July 2015 at 10:00, Blake Girardot <bgirardot@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi,

The general newsletter idea has been around in various forms for a while now.

What it needs is someone to step up, take ownership and commit to doing it.

It does not have to be complicated or extravagant, just collect some snippits of info from as many of the different groups doing humanitarian mapping in HOT/OSM as possible. I think the weeklyOSM model is good one to build off of as well.

We have a lot of little facilities in place to generate one and I would like it to be monthly. Tyler and I started on the basics of this just this week, so if someone would like to run with it, please write and let us know.

The NGO quarterly article idea is really good.

Cheers,
We know we have a lot of new mappers who we'd like to get map more
sessions. We also know that mappers like feedback on how their work is
used. Perhaps a short newsletter might help is keep in touch with all
our mappers. There are topics which get discussed in the mailing list
that might be of interest to others.

I suggest no more than quarterly, and not yet more smiling faces
gathered in a room, but perhaps one article per newsletter written by
one of the NGOs, that answers the question how do you use the data.
Even if its mixed with other data and I suspect it is, its feedback and
helps keep people mapping.

I also suggest one pointer to one tutorial, how to map buildings in iD
would be nice.

Perhaps even a discussion on Validation, talking to one end user
validated data was important to them.

And no I'm not volunteering to be editor.

Cheerio John
