<p>Thanks to all for the guidance.</p>
<p>I've set up a Wiki page, as well as added this project to the
import catalog:</p>
<p><a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Import/Catalogue/Fayetteville_Building_Footprints">https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Import/Catalogue/Fayetteville_Building_Footprints</a></p>
<p>In regards to the building classification, building=detached
seems weird to me as well, but it appears to be what the OSM
guidelines call for:</p>
<p><a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:building%3Ddetached">https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:building%3Ddetached</a>, sums
this up to be:</p>
<p>"A free-standing residential building usually housing a
single-family.
</p>
<p>Known as a <i>single-family home</i> in the United States, a <i>single-detached
dwelling</i> in Canada, and a <i>separate house</i> in New
Zealand.
</p>
<p>If the building shares a wall with another building (forming half
of a semi-detached pair, or one of a row of terraced houses) then
it should be rather tagged <tt
style="background:#EEF;white-space:nowrap" dir="ltr"><a
href="https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:building"
title="Key:building">building</a>=<a
href="https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:building%3Dhouse"
title="Tag:building=house">house</a></tt>."</p>
<p>It seems like the typical house in the US is "detached", and the
things we call townhomes/rowhomes are "house" in OSM? It's a bit
strange to me as well, but I understand that these are likely the
more global terms for these types of structures.<br>
</p>
<p>In regards to the imagery I'm using to check the footprints, it
is the "Fayetteville Current Imagery". This is our most current
imagery, flown about a year ago:
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://gis.fayetteville-ar.gov/faygis/rest/services/BaseMaps/Aerial_Current_WGS84/MapServer">http://gis.fayetteville-ar.gov/faygis/rest/services/BaseMaps/Aerial_Current_WGS84/MapServer</a><br>

<div>As Jon noted, you are required to create a import page on
the wiki to describe your planned import. You should also
announce it on the talk-us mailing list. You might also want
to join our Slack [1] import channel. But make sure you read
the import guidelines [2]. </div>
<div><br>
</div>
If you can involve local mappers, I'd suggest using the Tasking
Manager [3], to break the work into small chunks. We used voting
districts to breakup Kirkland, Washington Building and Addresses
[4] import. voting districts are nicely sized to import.
<div><br>
</div>
<div>In all of our imports, we took the opportunity to teach
people how to use JOSM to import the data. One of the nice
features is to use the Address Tags Validator Map Paint Style.
It colorizes the addr:street object the same as the highway=
road. If the two match, then they will be the same color. It
is a quick and easy way to spot differences. We identified a
number of errors in a local counties gis data. </div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>Let me know if there is anything I can help you with. We
are getting ready to announce another import in Washington
State so this is all fresh in my mind. (It goes quickly :-)</div>

<div dir="ltr">Hi Mike,
<div><br>
</div>
<div>Great idea!</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>I used to live in Fayetteville and now I'm out in Los
Angles helping out with the building import here. </div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>I agree with Frederik and Clifford about trying to
get someone to help you. We've used our import to build
some community around the import. It's a bit tedious so
we've only hand a handful of events. That said, your
address and building attributes would go a long way in
improving the data itself.</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>Maybe, though, the Fayetteville Flyer could get
involved? Or possibly the NW Democrat-Gazette? If they
want a free way to make more maps for their news stories
this could provide an incentive to improve the data. </div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>In regards to the data/tagging, it looks like some of
these houses are tagged as building=detached. I think
it'd be more appropriate to tag them building=house. For
duplexes building=residential. And for apartments/condos
usually building=apartments. The default is
building=yes. Are there possibly more data tags you
could add that would be of value? Maybe when the house
was built, a unique property ID number or unit count?</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>I'd also suggest creating a page on <a
moz-do-not-send="true"
href="http://wiki.openstreetmap.org" target="_blank">wiki.openstreetmap.org</a>
to detail the data and the import. Here's a link to
ours: </div>
<div>
<div><a moz-do-not-send="true"
href="http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Los_Angeles,_California/Buildings_Import"
target="_blank">http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/<wbr>wiki/Los_Angeles,_California/<wbr>Buildings_Import</a><br>
</div>
</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>And finally, how did the city collect the data and
how old is it? Sometimes the satellite imagery is more
up-to-date than the data. You may also be able to tie
into more up to date imagery collected by the city since
that would likely fall into the public domain under the
Arkansas Public Records Act. For instance, the tile
server here looks to have pretty good imagery (I'm not
sure on the age): <a moz-do-not-send="true"
href="http://gis2.accessfayetteville.org/faygis/rest/services/BaseMaps/Aerial_Current_WGS84/MapServer/tile/8/678760/250154"

<div><br>
</div>
<div>I'm happy to connect off-list if you have any
questions or need an introduction with the Flyer/DemGaz
folk.</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>cheers,</div>
