Hi

If we run the same software as the rest of OSM, we will build up knowledge on how to do it. Perhaps report a few bugs. And that knowledge will be useful if anyone wants to set up a private server. I think Brett Henderson did this for the Burma relief effort.

The only real concern that the community can have is if community members waste time on PD, esp. duplicating stuff. For example tracing stuff that already exists on the main server. But my intention is to mainly to upload data already collected with gosmore without any editing, which will be pretty quick.

I like WTFPL and CC-Zero sounds interesting. But being a community project we really need something very simple. Many people have already seen the wikipedia-pd license and it does not even sound like a legal statement. If the things that other licenses address like moral rights are really that important, other projects will have asked their members to abandon them long ago.

All I'm interested at this point is the server. Thinks like potlatch, mapnik and tah can wait. Perhaps one day someone will need PD data and then we at least have something.

Regards,
Nic,

Before we can answer that question I think we need to ask a couple of
other questions:

- Do we all agree on the "wikipedia" public domain style release of data?

I think there was agreement on that

- Do we have anyone familiar with the way the main OSM server is
set-up? Will we use this same exact set-up (file system structure and
software stack) or will we use a different one?

I still think we need to be really careful about how we proceed. I'd
still like to see us avoid replicating the OSM software/data stack.
I'd much rather see us work FIRST on a system that would allow public
domain enthusiasts to pool their data before integration into the OSM
database.

I'd really like to ask all our PD enthusiasts to try this type of
system out before we duplicate the entier OSM software/data stack.
This approach will be less work and will be viewed with much less
hostility by the rest of the OSM community. Can't we see how this
set-up will work before we make the decision to completely replicate
the OSM software/data stack?

Give me three months to get this type of PD data pool implemented.
Then, if the majority of the PD enthusiasts find this unsatisfactory,
we can talk about moving forward with a complete replication.
