I redownloaded them in the same session (new download layer) and they were shown
again.

Nope. I could not select them.

I did not try that. I'll try to provide a more exact report if I manage to
reproduce this.

BTW, if a way has really been deleted (by some malicious user or by
mistake), how do I get a look at the history of something that can
not be selected anymore?
