[Merkaartor] merkaartor freezes while opening gpx files

I think I also have seen something like this, but I don't have a recipe
to recreate it.

And I still get the error 412 when splitting a way and deleting a part
of it (I have a bugreport open about this which I should follow up to).

Merkaartor SVN also seems very slow with barely any OSM data loaded
(this is Ubuntu Hardy amd64), much slower than I remember it being a few
weeks ago.
