[OSM-newbies] Starting with JOSM and OpenStreetMap in general

I think this is what I don't understand. Why do I need to "create"
nodes when I already have all these points collected from my
GPS? Clearly I don't want to have to duplicate all of these
points? Or are you saying that I need to trim them down to a minimum
that still follows the course of the road accurately?
Like I said, the help file adequately explains the controls, so I
don't need that explained.
I do have one small advantage. I have not used any of this before,
so I don't have to get over the hump of the changes this past weekend. :)
So if I am understanding this correctly, why would the software be
designed to not convert my data points to nodes automatically? If I
have to hand edit all of this data, point by point, I am pretty sure
I won't be contributing to the database.
Oh, and I can't really view videos as I am on dialup. Because of
that I don't even have Flash Player installed. It is just too
painful waiting for videos to load.
