Hi Thomas

On 4/23/07, Thomas Rynne <thomas.rynne@gmail.com> wrote:

However, from what I have read I now think that I draw nodes manually
over the top of the GPS traces, using the traces a a guide.
Is that correct?

You're right - you use the GPS traces as a guide. I think the node placement can be fairly rough. Often the GPS accuracy is only good to 7 - 10m, which is about the width of a residential street, so some guesswork will be involved.

Do I just place the nodes roughly? Is there any special technique?
Should I cycle along streets in both directions so I can find the middle?

Cycling along the road in both directions will let you average the traces and should get you closer to the centre - but I think your time would be better spent cycling along each road once, and getting more streets onto the map.

How many nodes should I create per road?
Would a typical straight road consist of two nodes and one segment?

I usually create just enough nodes to follow the shape of the road. You'll need a node at every junction too. So, if it was a straight road with no junctions of it, you could get away with two nodes and one segment.

Also, I took some photos of street names to use the JOSM geo-tag
feature but can't find any information on how to enable it in JOSM.
Is there a web page I am missing?

Try this wiki page: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Photo_mapping - it might have what you need.
