At osm us we're in the process of bringing on a hired bookkeeper. This is not exactly a staff position but as close as it gets for us right now and i am excited for this:

- it will free up valuable time from people like ian dees who is treasurer our board and who could be doing so much other awesome stuff with their time

- the bookkeeper will bring expertise that we simply dont have

- we create continuity and systems in our organization that just makes us more efficient. Especially important for financials.

This is all under the oversight of the board which is voted for by the community and accountable to the community. As we grow, i would love to see more of this in OSM.

I am very interested in Frederik's original question - what are the experiences elsewhere with paid staff in community organizations? How do it right?

On Wednesday, March 11, 2015, Frederik Ramm <frederik@remote.org> wrote:

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
At our face-to-face meeting, we have identified a number of things
where having someone who spends a reliable number of hours every week
would probably work better than relying exclusively on volunteers
whose availability varies (and is subject to external factors like the
occasional day job etc).

I have, on purpose, not given a list of things because I didn't want
to limit discussion too much, I wanted to hear a broader range of
feedback than just commenting on the various aspects that we had come
up with. But of course this will all be discussed in more detail in
the future.
