Hi,

Speaking for myself, I only followed one or two meetings before being elected. I don't see much joy in following a board meeting where you can't really participate, except with questions at the end. True to Frederik's point, I don't always enjoy the online Board meetings either. I think it might be better with video and if there would be no need to mute unless speaking. But having an online discussion with seven people is always going to be hard.

While the Board meetings are obviously extremely important, there is much more time spent on the work in between meetings. Even the until-now yearly face to face meeting is more time spent together than all the online Board meetings together. So from my own experience, I do not see it as an issue with non-participation, and I do not see any improvement necessary.

It might be interesting to have other ways to publicly interact with the Board in an asynchronous way, as this would deal with timezones and bad internet connections and temporary personal time constraints. This would require Board members to speak more often with their own voice, rather than with a single Board statement. I like that idea, but I'm afraid it might make Board operations even harder.

On Fri, Nov 22, 2019 at 1:13 PM Frederik Ramm <frederik@remote.org> wrote:

Hi Allan,

I didn't want to say "you shouldn't stand for board if you haven't
participated in a board meeting", sorry if it came across like that.
(Until very recently, that wasn't even an option for people.) Personally
I was absolutely delighted to see you standing for election and I
implore you to stay on - I think your skill set is in very high demand
in OSMF and you've demonstrated your commitment to OSM in a variety of
ways.

The point I was trying to make is: As a board member you *must*
participate in meetings, but as a guest this is voluntary; so if people
don't join as guests but are interested enough to become a board member,
finding out why that's the case can give us ideas for improvement. For
example, if bad internet connectivity is an issue for people, we might
have to switch to a less demanding medium, etc.

Bye
