Just to confirm, this file from geofabrik is broken?

And this file you generated from the bz2 is good?

I'm not worried about the change in size and md5 differences. Those
could be the two files having different version strings, but if one
file works and the other doesn't, I can delta the two of em and figure
our why.

One more bit of information, which version of osmosis did you use?
