Comments on that welcome page:

explictly mentions MapBox, Craigslist, Skobbler, Stamen, MapQuest Open in an image - why them? What are the criteria for a business to be listed there? Do we list those that are big (then where's Apple), those that have been using OSM longest (then where's Cloudmade), those that comply with our license in an exemplary fashion, those that ... what? Why does the image mention "GPS Maps" which is the only non-brandname?

explicitly mentions Foursquare and Craigslist in the text - same here, what does it take to get mentioned?

Of a total of 6 brand names, 5 are US businesses - does that really represent the OSM landscape well, or is this the special landing page for new users from the US?

Where are the non-commercial maps that have been with OSM for much longer than any of those mentioned? Is the message we're sending here that OSM is mainly for business web sites to use?

--> I think that any mention of companies and brand names must be removed until we have an agreement on what makes a brand name suitable to be mentioned here. Replace by generic terms ("Have you come here from a newspaper's web site or a social media platform..." something like that.)

I don't like "get a free account". It sounds as if there was also a premium account.

The second most important thing that you can do with your account according to this page is "create a profile page". Is that really so important?

"Need help mapping, or not clear on how to use OpenStreetMap? Feel free to ask on OpenStreetMap's Help website!" - Please no ;) "Find answers on OpenStreetMap's Help website", that could work, but we shouldn't encourage people to ask their questions before they've even checked for existing answers.

Under "start editing", the following is said about editing: "Since OpenStreetMap is an open project, there are lots of different ways to edit the map - whether with a web based editor like iD, or on your iPhone with Pushpin, or with your Android phone with OsmAnd+." - With all due respect, iD is not a full featured editor and the two mobile editors mentioned are little more than niche applications. can do a fraction of what iD can do. All three editors mentioned, together, account 2% of the last 100,000 edits in OSM (at the time of writing). We should at least mention that there are advanced desktop editors in addition to in-browser or mobile applications.

The box about "add a note" could be clearer - it says: "This will add a marker to the map, which you can move by dragging the green plus sign. Click save to add a note", but we should maybe say "... Add your message, then click save to add a note"?
