Respectfully, 24m55s. This is a huge improvement on what we have now; let's get the improvement up sooner and tweak the details later.

So, for later: a few of us had a lively conversation on IRC about this yesterday. Some thoughts from my POV:

This is by definition a page for beginners. It's the first thing they see, therefore they are de facto beginners. That is not the JOSM audience.

Brevity is crucial. The copywriter evidently gets this, I'm not necessarily sure the commenters do. :) Adding MOAR EDITORS makes the page more encyclopaedic but more confusing to the beginner ("shit, I have to make a choice between editors? what's an editor? I thought I was one?"). Personally I'd suggest dropping the entire para about different editors.

Let's have a separate e-mail/interstitial page two weeks in to a new user's career, saying "Hi! Glad you're enjoying OpenStreetMap. Now you're comfortable with the basics, here are some more advanced options you can try." That is the place to mention JOSM (and P2, Vespucci, etc.). People will be more receptive then.

(Also worth considering a two-week mail to people who haven't edited beyond the initial sign-up, saying "Here's some more help." But that's a whole other ticket.)

+1 to Zverik's "Don't copy from other maps" under the big red cross.

On the brand names: obvious guideline to my mind is "those with widespread brand recognition". That means MapQuest, Craigslist, Foursquare, Garmin (we're in their Africa maps now), maybe Apple. Probably not Skobbler, Mapbox, Stamen (sorry guys) - one is comparatively small, the other two are developer-facing rather than consumer-facing. Frederik pointed out that this will need to be localised as more German users will have heard of (insert German site here) than Craigslist.

But that's all bikeshedding too. This is great overall.
