<p>Well if you're logged off then it doesn't know what your personal default is, so it will default to the default-default, which is iD, and that requires a login.</p>

<p>What I fixed in <a href="https://github.com/openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website/issues/754" class="issue-link" title="Allow remote control edit without logging in">#754</a> is that if you explicitly select remote from the drop down menu then it won't ask you to login.</p>
