<p><a href="https://github.com/HolgerJeromin" class="user-mention">@HolgerJeromin</a> your alternate is not actually right - that loads the PNG with the SVG overlaid on top of it (the web page you reference is using it to overlay a gradient on a different image).</p>

<p>I think we actually just want a second background that specifies the SVG and that old IEs will hopefully ignore?</p>

<p>BTW you say it's deliberately <code>background</code> not <code>background-image</code> but you don't say why?</p>
