<p>This will be a reasonably hard issue to solve. The default style uses colours from across the palette, not just red-orange, so it depends on both zoom level, location and which feature you are overlaying as to what colour is best. Note also that the overlays need to work on all the map styles.</p>
<p>I would therefore suggest that going for a single colour isn't going to work reliably, and so either a dual colour (e.g. orange with white halo) or otherwise guaranteeing a contrast (e.g. by fading out the map).</p>
