It actually changes the privacy issue (which if I've understood<br>
correctly is about giving the has of your email address to a foreign<br>

The issue is changed by the fact that you are in control of who<br>
will get the has of your email address (assuming you control<br>
your email address domain configuration). For my case (for example)<br>
the hash of my email would be sent to my own website, and only there<br>
(by services supporting libravatar protocol).<br>

Beside, the libravatar API allows to use SHA256 rather than MD5.<br>
That may also help (although it would disable compatibility<br>
with gravatar.com)<br>
