<p>See <a href="https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:disused:railway" rel="nofollow">https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:disused:railway</a> - this would combine backward compatibility and usage of life cycle prefixes. Users would be able to add the information what kind of disused railways there are, because railway=disused can not only describe disused railways with normal gauge, but also tram rails, subway rails, or narrow_gauge rails for example. So it might be important to add the "kind of rail". Because these kinds are also threatened differently if they are in usage.<br>
Would be the same with railway=abandoned and absndoned:railway=*</p>
