<p>I think something more obvious than that -- for example I've seen new mappers not even notice that little number while looking over their shoulder and teaching them to map, and when I say "hey you got a message" it's not obvious where to look.</p>
<p>I think an actual popup on the screen would be ideal -- "You just received a message! Click here to read" or "You just received a comment on one of your edits! Click here to read", which then goes to their message/comment. Or at least some kind of blinking or flashing thing on the top menu bar that makes it more obvious.</p>
