<p dir="auto">While this would, according to description ("If the name is not in wikidata then one from OSM is used.") would force people to fix mistakes in Wikidata even where OSM data exists and is correct.</p>
</blockquote>
<p dir="auto">Fortunately, that turned out to be a description of Mapbox Streets rather than of OpenMapTiles. <g-emoji class="g-emoji" alias="wink" fallback-src="https://github.githubassets.com/images/icons/emoji/unicode/1f609.png">đ</g-emoji></p>
<p dir="auto">We donât have to rely on vague descriptions because we can see the behavior for ourselves. For example, <a href="https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/648903263" rel="nofollow">this airport area in OSM</a> has both the <code class="notranslate">name</code> and <code class="notranslate">name:en</code> keys set to <code class="notranslate">San JosĂ© Mineta International Airport</code>, while <a href="https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1257392" rel="nofollow">the corresponding Wikidata item</a> has an English label of âSan Jose International Airportâ. (Both names are reasonable.) In MapTilerâs OpenMapTiles tileset, the <code class="notranslate">name</code> and <code class="notranslate">name:en</code> properties are both set to <code class="notranslate">San JosĂ© Mineta International Airport</code>, so an English-speaking user will see the OSM areaâs tag value, not the Wikidata itemâs label.</p>
<p dir="auto">By contrast, the OSM area lacks a <code class="notranslate">name:ja</code> tag, while the Wikidata item does have a Japanese label of âăăŒăăłă»Yă»ăăăżă»ă”ăłăăŒćœéç©șæžŻâ. A Japanese-speaking user will see Wikidataâs Japanese label rather than an OSM <code class="notranslate">name</code> tag in an undetermined language (which happens to be in English).</p>
<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/1231218/253770235-5eff0d33-3f9d-4ed1-898b-2a59c1952bb0.png"><img src="https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/1231218/253770235-5eff0d33-3f9d-4ed1-898b-2a59c1952bb0.png" width="372" alt="name: San José Mineta International Airport" style="max-width: 100%;"></a>
<p dir="auto">(This screenshot is of a tile inspector behind a login wall that requires a MapTiler API token. However, you can see the same behavior in <a class="user-mention notranslate" data-hovercard-type="user" data-hovercard-url="/users/ZeLonewolf/hovercard" data-octo-click="hovercard-link-click" data-octo-dimensions="link_type:self" href="https://github.com/ZeLonewolf">@ZeLonewolf</a>âs Planetiler-powered tile serverâs inspector by hovering over <a href="https://tile.ourmap.us/inspect.html#22/37.36291244/-121.92879588" rel="nofollow">this green dot</a>.)</p>
<p dir="auto">Mapper feedback can go both ways. We could say that this fallback makes it more difficult for mappers to detect gaps in language coverage; if only the Japanese speaker could see the English name, theyâd be tempted to add a <code class="notranslate">name:ja</code> tag on the spot. In a place as linguistically diverse as San JosĂ©, no one would have a problem with that edit. But <a href="https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk/2015-June/thread.html#73165" rel="nofollow">much ink has been spilled</a> about how translations and transliterations should not be indiscriminately tagged on mundane features in OSM in other places. The Wikidata fallback can serve to mitigate against edits that OSM doesnât want.</p>
<p dir="auto">The problem with such prominent placement on osm.org is that the mapper canât visually determine whether the label comes from OSM or Wikidata, or that thereâs even a discrepancy. OpenMapTiles doesnât currently expose any metadata explicitly indicating the source of a particular name on a particular feature. However, the style could show both the localized and unlocalized names together whenever the two differ.</p>
<p dir="auto">For example, in the proposed OpenMapTiles layer, a Latin speaker will see this city labeled as âFrancofurtumâ based on Wikidata instead of âFrankfortâ based on OSMâs <code class="notranslate">name</code> tag:</p>
<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/1231218/253771020-75ef0647-305e-4566-a897-daac55babd77.png"><img src="https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/1231218/253771020-75ef0647-305e-4566-a897-daac55babd77.png" width="172" alt="name: Frankfort" style="max-width: 100%;"></a>
<p dir="auto">(<a href="https://tile.ourmap.us/inspect.html#22/38.20090687/-84.87331472" rel="nofollow">Planetiler equivalent</a>)</p>
<p dir="auto">By contrast, <a href="https://zelonewolf.github.io/openstreetmap-americana/#map=11/38.2009/-84.8733&language=la" rel="nofollow">OSM Americana</a> shows both the Wikidata fallback and the OSM <code class="notranslate">name</code> tag, which can give the mapper peace of mind:</p>
<p dir="auto"><a href="https://zelonewolf.github.io/openstreetmap-americana/#map=11/38.2009/-84.8733&language=la" rel="nofollow"><gh:secured-asset-reference resource_type="UserAsset" resource_id="253772408"></gh:secured-asset-reference></a><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://github.com/openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website/assets/1231218/e90c362d-7af9-434e-be85-a64d970e6c2c"><img src="https://github.com/openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website/assets/1231218/e90c362d-7af9-434e-be85-a64d970e6c2c" width="400" alt="Francofurtum (Frankfort)" style="max-width: 100%;"></a></p>
<p dir="auto">I realize this is not an appropriate place to provide design feedback on the proposed OpenMapTiles style, nor to toot Americanaâs horn, but I think itâs important that we donât view localized label sources as a black-and-white, zero-sum issue.</p>
