<p dir="auto">Another strong reason to move the donation link out of the attribution string is that we don’t show the link at all if the user is looking at a non-OSM-hosted layer such as CyclOSM or MapTiler OMT. The user could arrive at the site from a link that specifies one of these layers, then the site remembers that setting, preventing the user from seeing the donation link unless they actively seek out another layer. I understand the choice to avoid plugging OSMF donations as part of attributing a third party, but the user would perceive value in OSM even when viewing one of these layers.</p>

The user would lose the consistent site navigation and might not be able to find their way back before losing interest. I suspect we could mitigate this concern by having the link open a new tab (or new window, depending on browser preferences). Other possibilities include adding a subtle <g-emoji class="g-emoji" alias="arrow_upper_right">↗️</g-emoji> icon beside the link or creating a simple landing page here on the site that takes you to the supporting site.</p>
