<div dir="ltr">Hi all,<div><br></div><div style>Just a few thoughts on SotM-Asia, because I had a chance to talk about this with Venka yesterday.</div><div style><br></div><div style>I think right now we talk about three options:</div>
<div style><ul style><li style>Indonesia (Jakarta)</li><li style>Philippines (Manila)</li><li style>Thailand (Bangkok)</li></ul><div style>We have not talked about any "call for venue" procedure, but there is not much time left until December or January.</div>
<div style>It's obvious that there is a strong interest to have SotM-Asia, which is a) affordable for people from Asian countries and b) in a country where Visa applications are not a nightmare for many.</div><div style>
<br></div><div style>For this first SotM-Asia the time for planning and organization would be very limited, and to me it seems that in Thailand a rough concept, an interesting venue and idea for SotM already exists. </div>
<div style>Also there is another strong argument in my opinion for Thailand in case we combine SotM Asia with FOSS4G Asia: we could celebrate 10 years FOSS4G anniversary then in the country where the first FOSS4G was held.</div>
</div><div style><br></div><div style>Looking at who is interested to organize SotM-Asia, most of us are involved in OSM and also OSGeo. So I don't expect anybody would be against a combined FOSS4G/SotM event.</div><div style>
Making a combined event also doesn't force people with a smaller budget to choose between either SotM or FOSS4G. This year in UK the situation is very unfortunate with a rather long break between both events. How does someone from Philippines want to explain a EU immigration officer that he needs a Visa for almost 4 weeks? To afford such a long stay or explain to your employer is another question.</div>
<div style><br></div><div style>So I would propose to make a rather quick and pragmatic decision, that the local team can get started as soon as possible.</div><div style>And it would be great to already be able to announce the 2nd SotM-Asia in December/January, so why not already think about the next years and try to start planning early.</div>
<div style>Maybe we can join efforts this year to get some tools in place that simplify planning and organizing of future events. I want to avoid that a local team needs to almost start from scratch every year. </div><div style>

for SotM/FOSS4G joint event between 20 - 26 Jan 2014 (only 4 days
event).<br>
I and Dr. Nitin (from AIT) will be a core member and prepare more
draft proposal.<br>
