Well, this might depend on the local language. In German it's the same that rivers are either male or female ("der Rhein"/"die Donau"). But I would definetly not include this information in the name. In a map it should only read the name of the river itself.</p>
<p>BTW, regarding the original question whether to include "river": I couldn't think of an example in German where this would apply. So I think I would tend not to include it globally.</p>
