<p>In UK English (not sure about other dialects!) "depth" is often used in a horizontal sense. The depth of a cupboard or a shelf for example, or the depth of a hole you have drilled. The depth of an adit would make perfect sense to me - indicating how far it penetrates into the substrate. If it is straight, it is equal to the length; if there corners, the length may be greater than the depth.</p>
