I totally agree with you, no reason to map its former use. (Just as for railways, that is why I gave it as an example to your question). As you can see here [1], part of that history is mapped. I now realize I should map a few more cranes. The Dutch Wikipedia page [2] mentions its former use. The OSM object [3] links to that page.

regards

m.

[1] http://gk.historic.place/historische_objekte/l/en/index.html?zoom=16&lat=51.08998&lon=4.38432&select=w373513923&pid=HaHbHcSaHe

[2] https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Schorre

[3] https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/879950048#map=15/51.0898/4.3890

On Wed, Jan 6, 2021 at 7:51 AM Stefan Tauner <stefan.tauner@gmx.at> wrote:

On Wed, 6 Jan 2021 07:27:12 +0100
If it would be significant enough then it should be tagged with
something historic=*. But if it isn't then we should not. OSM is not an
interactive history book about human impact on the world. Adding a
description and mentioning the past history of the clay pits might
be an alternative here but in general I personally strongly prefer
linking (and improving) respective external sources such as Wikipedia
articles in such cases.
