Shiplifts are run by operating engineers / crane operators, their systems are maintained by crane mechanics, and their parts are crane parts. <br></div><div>If there is an easy distinction between 'lifts' and 'elevators' is that 'lifts' have the ability to vary their position ( by rails, floating, air bearings, whatever ) and have individual controls on the mechanisms to accommodate variable load distributions, where elevators are more or less fixed and horizontally constrained along their travel path. <br></div><div>There is a colloquial British use where lift is synonymous with office building elevator, but if it's in a marine context, it's a crane. <br></div><div>
