this manufacturer: <a href="https://www.jetdock.com/what-is-a-boat-lift.asp" rel="noreferrer" target="_blank">https://www.jetdock.com/what-is-a-boat-lift.asp</a></div></div><div><br></div><div>Despite the trade claims, Jetdock is technically a type of 'slip way', where the vessels is moved horizontally up / down an incline ( it is't obvious in Jetdock, because it is a groove for the keel ) to/from the water, via friction reducing means such as wheels, rails, log rollers, grease, or in the old days, banana peels. In marinas, sometimes a sling lift is used in conjunction with a slipway. <br></div><div>Sometimes retarding devices such as cables with fusible links are used, sometimes the vessel is launched sideways. 
Here is one we launched from Lockheed Shipyards: <a href="https://cdn10.picryl.com/photo/1984/06/29/the-dock-landing-ship-uss-germantown-lsd-42-floats-in-the-duwamish-river-during-c80d97-1600.jpg">https://cdn10.picryl.com/photo/1984/06/29/the-dock-landing-ship-uss-germantown-lsd-42-floats-in-the-duwamish-river-during-c80d97-1600.jpg</a>... At one of these launches, we were across the river, directly astern, and for the second ship of the class they had added pre-launch substantially more equipment, but never updated the launch calculations. <br></div><div>So as it slid, the break away lines which were intended to swing the ship around the corner in line with the river just snapped but didn't turn the vessel, so it headed straight across the river towards us, pushing up an enormous wave. Nothing like seeing something the size of an ocean liner bearing down on you - it ran aground just short of us. <br></div></div><div id="DAB4FAD8-2DD7-40BB-A1B8-4E2AA1F9FDF2"><br>
