Brian's "riverbank" automated edit has caused a lot of problems, in particular it removed river islands and it perpetuated a large number of riverbank-related errors (by creating new dates for the new data with errors copied from the old data). As the edits were not declared as automatic, there are no reasons to doubt the quality of the data. The error types, at least in my area, are widespread import errors (riverbanks derived from landuse data based on landownership, and not on water-land borders, and falsely connected waterways, that are in reality passing one over the other).

Please do not repeat the same errors again. As far as I can see the riverbank replacement stopped somewhere at half point and the clean-up effect is null, as data users have now to take into account the old and the new tagging schems

On Mon, 3 Jan 2022 at 14:20, Dave F via Tagging <tagging@openstreetmap.org> wrote:

Hi
I agree that landuse=reservoir tag should be swapped to natural=water,
water=reservoir. It will fit in with all the other water=* tags. Britain
is now devoid of 'waterway=riverbank' 'landuse=lake' tags

I see no reason why it can't be done on mass. It was why the software to
do it was written. There will be no creation of new errors, just
existing ones moved to a different tag. Automatic edits will always
produce fewer errors than anyone mistyping or selecting the incorrect
choice from a pop down menu when editing individual objects.

The other part of your proposal is bound to be more problematic as the
decisions are subjective, but should been seen as separate & not hinder
the tag swap.

Water=* is a more extensible tag than landuse so is better suited to
accommodate all the different varieties mentioned in this thread.

I think landuse=basin
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:landuse%3Dbasin
Should have the same red box warning that landuse=reservoir had. Unsure
why a user felt the need to amend it today.
