It isn’t a hot topic for “people". It’s a hot topic for Soren. There is already a consensus within the wider OSM community that there’s nothing wrong with the phone= tag, it’s just that Soren refuses to accept any viewpoint other than his own.

As a list admin I have some semblance of responsibility to make sure that the list proceeds in an orderly and respectful fashion, rather than devolving into a repetitive recounting of people’s individual hobby-horses. We have had that situation on the mailing lists previously (in particular on the legal-talk@ list in years go by) and it is disastrous for community cohesion.

If Soren is able to grow up a little and demonstrate - through respectful participation on other mailing lists and channels - the ability to accept others’ opinions, then he will of course be welcome back on the tagging@ list.

My view as an admin is that ignoring a prior warning, and Soren has happily told me in a follow-up mail he deliberately ignored it, is sufficient grounds for a ban. The servers which host these mailing lists are of course controlled by the OSM Foundation, and Soren is welcome to write to the OSMF board to appeal against my decision should he so choose.
