In the 13 years since the list was set up, two users have previously been banned, with the ban lifted after a short period of time: one for incivility to another list member, one for volume of emotive messages drowning out other contributors.<br />

No, it really isn't. There are plenty of things that go past on this list that I might, and do, disagree with. I find the angels-on-a-pin debate as to whether phone or contact:phone is used a matter of mild exasperation and/or amusement (I can't remember the last time I used either tag), whereas a change to cycle route relation tagging might require me to spend an afternoon recoding my relation processing then re-run a two-day import process... that, for me, is a hot topic. But self-evidently I haven't banned people because I disagree with them on that.<br />

The tagging@ list was set up for two principal reasons: to remove tagging@ discussions from talk@ where they were overwhelming general discussion, and to encourage such discussions to be held publicly so that everyone who wanted to could participate. My concern as list admin is that if people keep bringing the same topics back again in an attempt to steamroller discussion, then the list will fail in its aim of encouraging public participation in the tagging process. I try to run the list with a very light touch and there are many, many messages where I've bit my tongue much though I might think them extremely unhelpful.<br />

Soren brought phone vs contact:phone to the list. He did not achieve the consensus he sought. He then brought it back to the list in a second attempt. I asked him not to do so again at risk of a ban. He then brought it back to the list for a third time and mailed me that "And the second time I kept ignoring".<br />

If Soren or you or anyone disagree with this, these lists are hosted on OSMF servers and you are absolutely within your rights to appeal to the OSMF board. Personally I am pleased to see the formal moderation guidelines adopted by OSMF for talk@ and osmf-talk@; I would like to see lists, including this one, more actively moderated; and I look forward to OSMF's subcommittee staffing up such that they can take responsibility for other lists and channels, including this one.<br />
