I don't think anybody is advocating deprecating the ref tag. In my example there was a ref applied to an exit ramp that was tagged with the number of the exit. The way in question has no sign indicating a ref. Tagging it with a ref is incorrect. I interpreted the discussion as<br>

do not put ref=N on an exit ramp for exit N. that belongs on the exit<br>
junction node. ramps do not generally actually have a ref of the<br>
exit.<br>
