I'm wanting to reopen this discussion.

The context is long-distance walking tracks, and avoiding duplication of
the relations covering them (as bits and pieces get added in different
geographical areas).

I've found a very useful renderer at http://osm.lonvia.de/world_hiking.html

The two routes I've started show here:

http://osm.lonvia.de/world_hiking.html?zoom=10&lat=-35.08253&lon=149.03117

(I'm still playing with the osmc:symbol tag).

The Heysen Trail in South Australia is the third major route showing.

124080 Heysen Trail
176684 Bicentennial National Trail
308594 Hume and Hovell Walking Track

Cool. There's a list on Wikipedia if you want to add more :) I notice Tasmania is a blank slate atm. I'll be adding the Overland Track in February, and hopefully the Tasmanian Trail a bit later.
