We have natural=gorge https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:natural%3Dgorge documented for a canyon. It's just that the current use of that tag is only where there is a different official name to the one signposted/in common use.

On Mon, 27 Jan 2025 at 22:09, Tom Brennan <website@ozultimate.com> wrote:

There are quite a few unnamed creeks in the Blue Mountains that have canyons in them. The canyons have names.

In some cases these creeks are just given the canyon name eg

* Coachwood Canyon: https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/210714163
* Closet Canyon: https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/402128556

In other cases, the creek is given a name like <Canyon Name> Canyon Creek eg:

* Firefly Canyon Creek: https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/210707878
* Newnes (Starlight) Canyon Creek: https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/210711464

Neither of these seems ideal to me.

In the case of the first examples, the canyon generally makes up a very small part of the creek.

In the case of the second example, the names seem clunky and made up. I'd be more inclined to use "Firefly Creek" rather than "Firefly Canyon Creek", in the same way that many canyons are just given the name of the creek eg
* Dalpura Creek -> Dalpura Canyon (https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/630408810)
* Yileen Gully -> Yileen Canyon
* Fortress Creek -> Fortress Canyon
Of course they are still "made up" names!

The canyon names generally have acceptance in the outdoor community so I'm not fussed about that. My question is how best to construct a creek name for an unnamed creek, given the canyon name. And to then apply it consistently!

cheers
