For the record: I'm also unhappy about having two tags wich are synonyms for the same concept in OSM. Since foot was first, it is unfortunate that hiking started to be used. Now that hiking seems to be more established internationally I'd also prefer we use route=hiking everywhere.<br>
<br>What will be needed to change this on the wiki page? A vote somewhere? Because right now status quo rules, as usual and nobody seems to be happy with it. Yet nobody is able to change it either.<br><br>As soon as it is changed on the wiki (preferably for all pedestrian routes at once), I'd like to change all route and network relations in Belgium in one go.<span class="HOEnZb"><font color="#888888"><br>

However, I share your opinion that 'hiking' would be better than<br>
'foot' for hiking routes, certainly for the long distance hiking<br>
routes. The description on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiking" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiking</a> uses<br>
the word also for short walks, so I would see no problem in using it<br>
also for the short routes.<br>

So, two argument to change it to hiking in the Belgian wiki:<br>
- It is a spot-on description of the activity for which the routes are<br>
intended. (According to the aforementioned wiki page "walking outdoors<br>
on a trail for recreational purposes").<br>
- It is more widely used and would put us in line with the international wiki.<br>
<br>
If we reach a consensus on the list, we can change it in the Belgian<br>
wiki, but before that happens (if it ever happens), please use the<br>
'foot' convention.<br>
