I'm interested in taking your geobaseNHN-to-osm_script and making it work on Linux. I found version 0.35 [1], which is linked to from [2]. Is this the latest version of the script? Is this the script that should be used (or is there some other completely different script written by Frank or someone else)?

I see there is a directory for rules called rulesTXT. Is this the latest version of the rules, or will I need to update them from Google Docs/OSM Wiki/Somewhere else?

In the geobaseNHN-to-osm_ONE_TILE.bat file there is a call to another script, geobaseNHN-to-osm_SETUP.bat, but it isn't included in the zip file. Where is it, and what does it do?
So here's where we are at. fyi

The water direction flow, is not included in CanVec/Toporama, but is
available with the GeoBase WMS thats available.

We can convert the data on a national level, and it can be freely
hosted on archive.org

The script is rather easy to run (if you know how).

For me its not a priority to get done, but Yan Morin (who i chatted
with on #osm-ca IRC is tackling this, since experience was gathered in
the conversion of an increasing size in Quebec.

There is 2 issues with Language.
1 - we are missing out on ALOT of help, because this list is dominatly
english. So those who dont speak french, or dont take time to
translate, miss out on the volunteer efforts.
One solution is for more people to help man the #osm-ca IRC.
Currently, there are enough bilingual people who can assist and know
whats going on, at a national level. So the info can be freely passed
around.

2 - Tagging: I would recommend that the Parks Canada National
Protected areas be written with "name=english park name/ french park
name" and ALSO have the tags "name:en=english park" AND
"name:fr=french park".

So maybe this tagging method would be extended to all feature names?
But for Quebec the provincial rivers/lakes/roads have the french name
as default. So maybe only in New Brunswick should all tags be with the
"/" for the "name=*". ?

This, i think, is the reason why im promoting the idea of just making
the OSM files available, and letting local mappers drop the data in.
This way, even though the tags may not be 100%, but it allows for
customizing as you like.
And hey, if anyone wants to run the rules.txt over the source files
again, they are welcome too.

So ya, the purpose of working with Geobase NHN is 'cause the data is
organized in water basins. & easier to work with. As its just
following the water.

ok thats all for now,
cheers,
Sam
