Sam: I'll take one of the "water" relations as an example. What you would do is: delete the tagless ways that are currently in OSM and would be linked by that relation (the ones you had uploaded a week or two ago). This includes deleting the outer way (the way that represents the outline of the lake), and the inner way (that surrounds an island). Then make sure to copy the relation in its entirety and paste that into the OSM layer and upload. Then run Validator on the data (you can make a selection box around the way so that Validator will only run on that portion of the data and not the whole layer). You will get "duplicate node" errors because the newly copied water relation ways could share nodes with "wood" or "wetland" ways that you have already uploaded. Merge these nodes, then you should be ready to upload.<br>
<br>The situation is not quite this easy, however. It looks like you (sammuell) uploaded tagless ways on Sep 12 (take a look at <a href="http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/77328097">http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/77328097</a>). Then a bot/human (efred) went through and deleted duplicate nodes on Sep 15 (again, way 77328097 mentioned above). Then on Sep 19 you uploaded another copy of the same tagless way again (<a href="http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/78124481">http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/78124481</a>). So now there are two copies of these tagless ways in OSM. You will need to delete both of them from OSM before uploading the proper relation.<br>
<br>I see also that you did not delete the original water body that was uploaded to OSM two years ago (traced from landsat satellite imagery). Normally you will delete this original way when uploading the better Canvec data (unless you are working with some huge lake. If you're working with a large lake that will take several days or weeks to replace with Canvec, then you want to "split" {select a node or two then "Tools->Split Way"} the lake at the borders of the Canvec data you are working with, delete the old data that overlaps with the new Canvec data, and join the new Canvec data to the old OSM data (merge nodes and combine ways but this can be quite a complex process especially if you're merging a basic way from the old osm to a relation in the new canvec).<br>
<br>It looks like some of these problems (like not selecting the whole relation) is just a matter of experience with Josm. This will come with practice. It wasn't until about 6 months ago that I figured out relation editing myself, and I'm still finding little discoveries in Josm. Only two days ago I figured out how to use "Join overlapping areas" properly, and it's made me 10% more efficient when importing Canvec on very-sparse areas. Play around with Josm and learn from your mistakes and things will get easier.<br>

Were these areas originally relations? Remember that to select a
relation (including the tags) in Josm, you have to double-click on the
relation in the relation list, or select it in the list and click on
the dotted square button, or right-click the relation in "Member of"
and select the relation. Simply highlighting the way is not sufficient.
It sounds like this is what may have happened.<br>
