A couple of things spring to mind, the first is use a local copy of OSM with Maperitive and take out the bits you don't want from the rules such as roads etc. You can also add in custom features that are not included in the normal render. The second is load up JOSM with the area or part you are interested in. Download a square meter or so with no data as a new layer. Switch back to the first map. Select the bits you do want then copy them to the second map. Save the second map.

OSMConvert will compress the data nicely to PBF format. JOSM will read PBF format with a plugin, Maperitive will load them directly.

Then render the second map.

Cheerio John

Is there a guide as to how to extract Open Streetmap data, but only some of it?
I'm poking at the question of maps for amateur radio use. With this is
an interest in azimuthal equidistant projection maps. I want a map
database that covers the following:

- The outlines of all continents, and MAJOR islands
- The path of MAJOR rivers
- National level boarders

Bottom line, this information will be displayed on screen and even at
the highest screen resolution I have been able to find defined, a LOT
of detail could be dropped without ill effect.
Thanks.
