Somebody changed it in OSM from motorway to trunk some time ago as it is the case for the Souligny section in the east, and that feels logical to me but that makes it a large trunk for sure. It is no more a proper thrufare but rather road segment in and out of downtown. I see more value when the roads level reflects the purpose of that road in the network rather than the way it is built. Trunks are no minor roads and can certainly be built motorway style but with a more local role in the network. There is a lot of gray zones and room for interprétation in all this, for sure. But I like the way it is now personally. All the examples provided have now limitation or another that justified the trunk designation.

The Route 136 case would look like a dangerous precedent to downgrade freeway-grade roads that aren’t numbered in a series dedicated to freeways/autoroutes (e.g. Ontario 400 series, Quebec 1-99 to 400-999, Nova Scotia 100 series), or doesn’t have “Freeway Entrance” or signs to that effect. I did notice that being demoted as it was renumbered last year following the completion of the Turcot Interchange reconstruction. Maybe tag it as a trunk with motorroad=yes and/or expressway=yes, but it’s a physical extension of A-20 as it turns off to the Saint Lawrence to bypass Montreal, and I’ll have it restored to motorway until Rue Panet (the remainder, plus Souligny can be demoted to primary).

Under the proposal and even before that, we allow motorway “islands” or spurs on a road if the section to promote is at least around 3.2 km to 16 km, has at least two grade separated junctions/interchanges, and built to high-speed standard. Same can be said of Sir-Wilfrid-Laurier, Pie-XI and Route 138 up to the interchange at Kahnawake.

For the other trunk cases in Greater Montreal, here’s my take:

-Route 132 north of Boucherville up to Varennes: demote to primary with expressway=yes

-Route 335 marked trunk: demote to secondary with expressway=yes north of A-640. These can be best demoted and tagged with expressway tag.

In the Ottawa-Gatineau area, there’s also these disconnected trunks (primarily parkways which has some interchanges) and a lack of a trunk to connect Highway 417/Queensway to A-5 across the Ottawa River. Most of those can be easily demoted. Expressway tag can be considered for them except the Macdonald. For a trunk to connect Highway 417/Queensway and A-5, it’s either via Nicholas and King Edward (following the NHS) or via Vanier (to avoid downtown).

Sent from Mail for Windows
