To add some local and somewhat educated knowledge to this…. 99% of motorways or links (ways targeted in this project by David) in Ontario are asphalt / pavement surfaces, this is due to a few reasons… road Salt apparently eats away at concrete,
roadway lifespan in winters is apparently greater with pavement vs concrete. Also apparently the cost of repairs / ease of repairs during 4 seasons is better with asphalt than concrete.

The main motorway in Ontario that used poured concrete for a road surface was the 407 when it was first built, however expansion of the 407, including some exit/on-ramps are now constructed with asphalt / pavement.

Welcome to the list, and thank you for the introduction.

The task description on MapRoulette says "The goal of this challenge is to identify and add missing surface tags on motorways and motorway links as they represent high speed roads, and it is desirable to accurately tag the surface for these
highways."

In this specific case, it might be easier to assume in map and router applications that all motorways in Canada are paved unless tagged otherwise. I am not aware of any exceptions, and if some exist, they are probably already tagged as
unpaved. I'm seeing an analogy to defaulting to oneway=yes on motorways and only tagging the ways that are oneway=no.

If you are looking for more detail than "paved", can all MapRoulette challenge participants reliably distinguish between asphalt, concrete, and other types of pavement using aerial imagery?

Are you planning on expanding this challenge to other roads, and will those be also done using aerial imagery?

I am a little skeptical about using MapRoulette to obtain precise data like this. I have seen fords wrongly added in southern Ontario by MapRoulette users seemingly more eager to solve the task quickly than to improve the map. These users
displayed little familiarity about how roads in the region actually look: crossings of streams are overwhelmingly culverts, and many streams are anyway inaccurate from an old import, but cleanup takes time, so instead they put on the ford tag and moved on.
I don't think that kind of challenge really helps the map. But maybe we can set up a MapRoulette challenge to correct ford crossings on roads in southern Ontario that are actually culverts.
