<div dir="ltr"><div dir="ltr"><div>As a neighbor just south of the border I would suggest that there is value in using the same highway=* classification of the rest of the roadway and adding <a href="https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:expressway">expressway=yes</a> for enhanced two-directional roads. While there are enhanced interchanges, these roads really aren't up to the same standards as something like the A-20 near Montreal. Speeds are lower, lack of passing lanes, and other features make these much less than highway=motorway in my understanding. The usage of expressway=yes allows setting of expectations for an intermediate level of infrastructure, something more robust than a common road with much at-grade access, but also less than a full-on motorway.<br><br></div><div>The A-20 near Rimouski (<a href="https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=12/48.4052/-68.5915">osm</a>, <a href="https://zelonewolf.github.io/openstreetmap-americana/#map=12/48.4052/-68.5915">americana</a>, <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/@48.4052256,-68.5914828,3a,75y,71.48h,84.72t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s57x1f22rg7uLi2FCsQXlVw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu">street view</a>) is a very similar structure to US-7 near me in Southern Vermont (<a href="https://www.openstreetmap.org/?#map=15/43.1636/-73.0281">osm</a>, <a href="https://zelonewolf.github.io/openstreetmap-americana/#map=12.3/43.17506/-73.03172">americana</a>, <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/@43.1710771,-73.0351502,3a,75y,35.72h,80.42t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sIBrgrsAMdhNOALowj_3Vgg!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3DIBrgrsAMdhNOALowj_3Vgg%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D141.33246%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu">street view</a>) which we've identified as highway=trunk (for connectivity importance) + expressway=yes for infrastructure that is almost, but not quite up to our interstate highway standards due to the lack of directional separation. We've also been using expressway=yes for divided highways that have narrow-radius exits, are missing shoulders, and are otherwise just not quite up to motorway standards. For example, NY-5 (<a href="https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/42.9135/-74.1201">osm</a>, <a href="https://zelonewolf.github.io/openstreetmap-americana/#map=16.08/42.913339/-74.120837">americana</a>, <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/@42.9129877,-74.1207551,3a,75y,285.73h,81.18t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sKzmwHqkvnsnNAcwhxoWfwg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu">street-view</a>) is tagged as highway=primary (for connectivity importance) + expressway=yes as it is 4 lanes and divided, but has at-grade intersections which disqualify it from highway=motorway. A second example is the Taconic State Parkway (<a href="https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=15/41.7726/-73.7645">osm</a>, <a href="https://zelonewolf.github.io/openstreetmap-americana/#map=13.24/41.77874/-73.75413">americana</a>, <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/@41.7732296,-73.7666582,3a,90y,328.23h,79.31t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s7Uf5IK79Wcb8xWlaj7DSCA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu">street-view</a>) which is divided and mostly has grade-separated interchanges, but shoulders are narrow, speed limits low, some at-grade crossings, and interchanges often have short-radius turns -- this is close to interstate highway standards but not quite there, hence expressway=yes.</div><div><br></div><div>The only real exception for using highway=motorway on in the US for something other than 4+ lanes, divided, and fully-controlled access is I-93 in Franconia notch (<a href="https://www.openstreetmap.org/?#map=13/44.1160/-71.6763">osm</a>, <a href="https://zelonewolf.github.io/openstreetmap-americana/#map=13/44.116/-71.6763">americana</a>, <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/@44.1178478,-71.6822842,3a,75y,14.97h,78.31t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sWDuvbKo8DzG8817VnjuyCA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu">street-view)</a> where the Interstate narrows down to 2-3 lanes, though even here there is usually a physical divider rather than just paint dividing the directions.</div><div><br></div><div>Best,<br></div><div>Adam<br></div></div><br><div class="gmail_quote"><div dir="ltr" class="gmail_attr">On Thu, Apr 11, 2024 at 6:53 AM Daniel Bégin <<a href="mailto:jfd553@hotmail.com">jfd553@hotmail.com</a>> wrote:<br></div><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0px 0px 0px 0.8ex;border-left:1px solid rgb(204,204,204);padding-left:1ex">

<b>Subject:</b> [Talk-ca] Two-way freeway tagging</font>
<div> </div>
</div>
<div>Should these be tagged as normal motorway with oneway=no (like with two-lane expressways common in rural parts of Japan), or use trunk with expressway=yes (as like what is being done south of the border)? Examples: part of Sudbury Bypass, Autoroute de
l'Énergie, and the A-20 near Rimouski. </div>
