Thanks for your suggestions. I think it's fairly clear, though, that it 
would not be a good idea to change the name of OSM itself - given how well 
known it is already.

The way I can see things going now is to always use the 'default' OSM 
renderer in a mashup -  much like Google mashups use the 'standard' google 
maps and overlay other data on top. For OpenPubMap, for example, I can 
envisage the standard OSM map overlaid with markers for pubs, much like 
similar things that use google.

To this end, I would hope that the default OSM map uses contours at 
1:25000 and 1:50000 scales, so that it can usefully be used by walkers. 
(yes - this is an offer for me to integrate my srtm stuff in....)
