Have experience of that too, but in pre-OSM days - though another year with a memorable long hot summer, 1995. It was the VE Day holiday weekend and I went up there in a friend's car, and did quite a long hike round that part of the moor (Yes Tor and High Willhays,
and some other noticeable summit which I didn't know the name of, about 2 miles to the south). What was very noticeable about that part of Dartmoor - the only part of Dartmoor I've visited to date, so not sure if it's typical - was a complete lack of footpaths,
you really did have to hike across rough country to get anywhere.</div>

Reminds me a bit of one of my earliest (relatively speaking) mapping trips, which included the Tyneham ranges in south Dorset. That has a similar situation, but is open a bit more often - IIRC it's continuously open in July and August plus one weekend a month
the rest of the year...<br>

<div>The old "tank road" above Okehampton Camp up on to the north of Dartmoor is the same. They have a firing schedule and when they are not firing you can drive up there, otherwise not a good idea. Should really be tagged the same as these others.<br>
